The Standard Mourns the Passing of Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Eric E. Parsons

Having served the company for 40+ years; A leader in community engagement

January 10, 2019 — PORTLAND, Ore.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Standard Insurance Company (The Standard) today reported that Eric E. Parsons, former chairman, president and chief executive officer of the company (2004 –2009) passed away on Jan. 9 at age 70. The Standard extends its condolences to his family, particularly his wife, Janet.

Eric was at The Standard for more than 40 years, shaping it in fundamental ways and fostering a legacy of community involvement that continues today.

Eric began his career with the company in 1968 and served The Standard in numerous roles including chairman, president and chief executive officer; senior vice president and chief financial officer; vice president, Investments; and, president of the company’s Mortgage and Real Estate subsidiaries.

Eric was chairman of the StanCorp Financial Group, Inc. and Standard Insurance Company boards of directors from 2004 until 2011. He served as chairman and chief executive officer of both companies from May 2004 to June 2009 following service as president and chief executive officer since January 2003. He was appointed to StanCorp’s board of directors in August 2002 and elected chairman in May 2004.

Eric was a graduate of Lewis & Clark College, Northwestern University’s School of Mortgage Banking and was a Fellow in the Life Management Institute.

During his career at The Standard, Eric also served on the boards of various nonprofits, earning him a reputation as both a generous philanthropist and community leader. Some of the boards and organizations to which Eric dedicated his time and resources included:
