A ‘concrete commitment’ to the complexities of planning
SPRINGFIELD, MA. NOVEMBER 13, 2015 – Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) today launched the “Vow to Protect” digital campaign in support of LGBT families and marriage equality by debuting a series of videos by award-winning documentary director, Stacy Peralta.
With Peralta, MassMutual interviewed LGBT couples and captured their thoughts on the importance of marriage, this year’s monumental Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, and the steps they can now take to secure their futures and protect the ones they love.
In the videos, these diverse couples speak earnestly about their respective journeys, including the struggles faced before marriage equality, the joy they experienced at its realization, and the assurances and security that marriage now brings to their lives.
MassMutual has been a longstanding supporter of the LGBT community, as an employer, an insurance provider, and a corporate citizen. In 2011, MassMutual was a “first responder” signatory of an amicus brief in opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act. Additionally, MassMutual rated 100% on the most recent Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index (November 2014) and was named a Top 10 Company for LGBT Employees by DiversityInc (April 2015).
Concrete Commitment
The “Vow to Protect” campaign is the online demonstration of this concrete commitment, coming to life through the Peralta-directed videos during a milestone year due to the June 2015 Supreme Court decision legalizing the right of same-sex couples to marry in all 50 states. Prior to this decision, the LGBT community had a more complex relationship with financial planning, as couples were faced with more challenges of navigating complex legal hurdles when establishing child custody, legal protections and even final wishes for their loved ones.
“At MassMutual, we value diversity and inclusion and we are committed to helping all of our customers secure their futures and protect the ones they love, regardless of color, gender, religion or sexual orientation,” said John Chandler, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at MassMutual. “The ‘Vow to Protect’ campaign is just one symbol of MassMutual’s commitment to support, and be a resource for, members of the LGBT community. By sharing stories of real-life couples, we hope all audiences will pause to reflect on their rights and vow to protect those who matter most to them.”
In tandem with the campaign video release, MassMutual is honored to present the “MassMutual Vow to Protect Equality Award” to Out magazine’s Out100 Honoree, Evan Wolfson, at this year’s Out100 Gala on November 11. MassMutual will present Wolfson this title award in recognition of his vital role in helping to protect love. Wolfson is the president and founder of Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage equality nationwide. He also the author of “Why Marriage Matters: America, Equality, and Gay People’s Right to Marry”.
